We’ve gathered some of our favourite places to explore – from beautiful local spots just minutes away to unforgettable destinations a little further afield.
Discover The Area
The countryside surrounding Moulin de la Barde is surrounded with paths and quiet country lanes. Close by is a public footpath running alongside a river with an abundance of wildlife, flora and fauna. The river is popular with the local fisherman, and can be fished with a licence. There are also numerous other footpaths and cycle routes around the village and the nearby villages.

Moulin de Poltrot
This restored mill is now a fantastic outdoor recreation area. With open access it offers riverside walks along the River Dronne, picnic areas, fishing spots, a treetop adventure course, canoeing, and a snack bar – perfect for families.
Aubeterre-sur-Dronne
Listed as one of Les Plus Beaux Villages de France, Aubeterre is a must-see. Explore the extraordinary monolithic church – the largest underground church in Europe – wander the shady village square lined with cafés and restaurants, and browse artisan shops selling pottery, jewellery and artwork. Down by the river you’ll find a sandy beach, play area, snack bar, and canoe hire.
Riberac - Verteillac - Chalais
These quaint market towns are ideal for soaking up everyday French life.
• Ribérac (Friday mornings) hosts one of the biggest markets in the Périgord region.
• Verteillac (Saturday mornings) is full of charm and comes alive on market day.
• Chalais (Monday mornings) offers a traditional market and a hilltop château with sweeping views across the countryside.

Saint-Aulaye
The picturesque bastide town of Saint-Aulaye (25mins) has a riverside beach and snack bar, Arbor Parc (tree top zip wires) and canoeing. Relax on the beach, enjoy an ice-cream or crêpe, and if you’re lucky there may be a game of pétanque in progress.
Villebois-Lavalette
Perched on a hilltop, this historic town features a château with origins dating back to Roman times. In the centre, the impressive 16th-century wooden market hall is now a protected monument. Market day is Saturday morning. Nearby, in Magnac-Lavalette, you’ll find the elegant Château de la Mercerie, often called the “Little Versailles of the Charentes”, with its striking 220-metre façade and beautiful grounds.
Grand Etang de la Jemaye
A favourite with locals and guests, this large freshwater lake offers sandy swimming areas, fenced children’s play zones, canoe and pedalo hire, a snack bar/restaurant, and a 4.5 km walking and cycling trail with a wildlife observatory halfway around.
Brantôme
Around 50 minutes away, Brantôme – the “Venice of the Périgord” – is a picturesque town with a magnificent Benedictine abbey, riverside restaurants, and pretty cobbled streets. Nearby you can visit the impressive Grotte de Villars cave system and fascinating prehistoric gardens.
Périgueux
With its impressive 12th-century Saint-Front Cathedral, medieval lanes, and half-timbered houses, Périgueux makes a wonderful day trip. Enjoy hidden squares, cafés, shops, and the fascinating Vesunna Gallo-Roman Museum, where viewing balconies look out over remarkable archaeological remains.
Bergerac
The charming old town of Bergerac is full of narrow cobbled streets, half-timbered houses, and pretty squares with cafés and gift shops. For a different perspective, take a traditional gabarre riverboat cruise – a relaxing hour-long trip through a protected bird sanctuary.

Saint-Émilion – Cognac – Bordeaux
Famous for their vineyards, wines, and spirits, these beautiful cities offer tours, tastings, historic streets, and spectacular scenery.
Lascaux Caves & the Vézère Valley
The Vézère Valley, around 1hr 30 minutes away, is rich in history, stunning chateaux and the world-famous prehistoric site of Lascaux, home to one of the most extraordinary collections of prehistoric art ever discovered – a fascinating and unforgettable visit. Stroll the charming streets of riverside villages such as Les Eyzies, or striking cliffside dwellings such as La Roque Saint-Christophe. With peaceful walking trails, beautiful scenery, and fascinating museums, the Vézère Valley offers an unforgettable day out for history lovers, nature enthusiasts, and families alike.
Royan & Saint-Georges-de-Didonne
The nearest coastline is around 1 hr 45 minutes away, offering sandy beaches, seaside towns, delicious seafood restaurants and a great day out by the Atlantic.
Futuroscope (Poitiers)
Ideal for families with older children, Futuroscope combines 3D IMAX shows, thrilling simulators, interactive attractions, and spectacular evening displays.
